Students will research and write a five page history paper that identifies a person who has made a significant contribution to medicine. I chose to make it on René Laennec
Description
Students will research and write a five page history paper that identifies a person who has made a significant contribution to medicine. The individual of significance can be from Ancient Times to 2020.
Although you are formatting the paper using APA format (only, do not use MLA), I do not want you to provide an abstract.
The paper should include 5 pages of content. Please include a cover page, just do not include an abstract. You will submit through Turnitin.
Format the paper to include a Running Header on each page and, number each page.
Use black ink and 12 point font, Times New Roman (ONLY).
Set up the margins of the paper so that you have a ONE INCH MARGIN, from top, left side of page, right side of page and the bottom. So, there is no shortening the paper. You will double space between lines. BUT, do not double space between paragraphs, this would result in you double double spacing, which is not correct.
Each paragraph should have at least one reference. With APA you will reference by including the authors last name and date i.e. (White, 2020). Do not use numbers or footnotes. At the end of the paper there is a reference page. References are listed by authors last name in alphabetical order. This page is called a reference page, not a bibliography.
Plagarism. By definition, this 17th century derivative term from the Latin word plagiarius which means kidnapper, the Greek word plagium means kidnapping. So, what you know from medical terminology is that the suffix, ism means action, process, state of, condition, opinion, principle, ideology or doctrine. The point being, plagarism is the process or condition of taking something that does not belong to you. In history, there is no such thing as an original thought, why not? Because you were not there during the historical event. So, your task for this assignment is to obtain research literature related to the person you are writing the paper on. Read, synthesize and write using your own words the information that you have derived from the research. Another hint, I have a general idea of the typical vocabulary that is used by our college students. If a student writes a paper that uses very eloquent terms, words or phrases, a red flag will go up. I would rather see a student write in simple, complete sentences that are understandable than a student writing using words that are not the students own. Please, do not try and impress by using superfluous, flowery, fluffy words. Keep your word choices real, and simple.
DO NOT include any pictures or graphics. I just want a written paper that is grammatically correct with correct spelling and use of the APA format, make sure all sentences are complete and not run on sentences. A hint, if your sentence takes up more than one line, it is a run on. I pull out my hair when I see sentences that take up three lines or a paragraph %$#@*!
Anyhow, have fun with the selection of the individual that you choose. Be sure to select someone of interest to you. If you are not sure of the name of the person but you know of a topic look up the “person who discovered….” For example, for example, if you are interested in a particular disease such as HIV or Guillian Barre, then start by researching the topic and find out who discovered the disease.
The library has an abundance of resources. I recommend that you contact the Librarian or, at minimum go to the Library via Mysite. The library also has resources on using the APA format.
I require students to use the APA format because, medical literature and research is written using APA. You will need to become familiar with this format when working with a physician. At least from our classes you can report to the medical office/physician during your interview for the externship that you have used the format in the past. This is huge since most MA programs do not introduce students to the format (shame).
I will post a list through the discussion board Q&A section of individuals. Students should identify who they are writing about since I do not want duplicates. Remember, this paper will serve as the topic for your oral presentation at the end of the course. I honestly do not want to read more than one paper on Florence Nightingale. Many students think because I am a nurse that if they write on Nightingale I will like their paper. I am familiar with the pioneer of nursing and, she was amazing but, I do not want to read more than one paper on her.
Your paper will have five sections.
Introduction
The Introduction will be a complete paragraph that introduces the subject matter that you will be discussing. The body of the paper should at least be three paragraphs. Perhaps more since this is the section that is substantial.
Body
In the body of the paper tell me about the persons childhood, upbringing and major influences on his life. Describe the time period in which he/she was raised. Describe what society was like during the time in which the individual made their scientific discovery. What factors lead up to the discovery? Was the discovery intentional? Was there a major outbreak of illness that drove the person’s research? What was the political environment like during that time, was there any political conflict? How about the economy, was money abundant or, was there a depression or limitation of resources.
Conclusion
The conclusion will basically summarize again, why the discovery was so very important. Be sure to tell me whether or not the discovery is still relevant today and, what the long term benefits of this discovery might be. Finally, tell me why you feel this person was such a significant person. This will be the only place where you will provide your opinion. So, the last sentence might read “In this author’s opinion ____ made a great contribution because without this contribution to medicine the world would ______. (you get the idea but notice that I used the phrasing “In this authors opinion, I did not use “In my opinion.”
This brings me to a few final points about this assignment. When writing this paper, you will not refer to yourself as I or me. In fact, you really should not be included in the paper except at the end when you are interjecting your opinion. Also, when referring to the person of significance, the first time you introduce the person use their full name i.e. Dr. Sigmund Freud. All subsequent references to the person should use the last name, so, in this example merely state Freud. Do not refer to the person by their first name such as Sigmund. This type of reference is too casual and too personal.
Use current edition of the APA format.
Select references from the research literature, not the newspaper or Buzzfeed or Wikipedia ;(
Double space each sentence
Do not double space between paragraphs
Format your citations correctly
Do NOT use quotes
No spelling, grammar or punctuation errors
Use past tense, not present tense
Do not personalize

Introduction, Body and Conclusion
FIVE PAGES of content
Do not try and cut the paper short by using large margins.
Use only one inch margins for the top, bottom, left and right margins
Use a running head on each page
Format the reference page correctly
Have fun with this and select someone of interest, this will be the same person that you will be presenting on during the five minute oral presentation
