In CHAPTER 2, the textbook examines how management theory has evolved since it began with Frederick Taylor and the Gilbreths’ leading studies in the late 1800’s. As it evolved from 1) a scientific / administrative focus, to 2) a behavioral focus, to 3) a quantitative and operations focus, we now look at 4) a systems viewpoint that has the potential to produce synergy in a business venture.

How have you seen examples at work (or school) of the original three focus areas being a part of the management process? Does your company show that it has moved beyond the original three focus areas to the fourth…and how would a systems viewpoint improve the efficiency and effectiveness of your short or long-term work?

Give us some examples of how you could incorporate a systems viewpoint to make improvements in an ongoing process.

CHAPTER 3- A growing area for companies has been their efforts in sustainability and corporate social responsibility. In fact, many firms have added one or more departments to focus on protecting and serving the three P’s….people, planet and profits.

At the Cleveland Clinic, the Chief of Design and Chief of Operations are working together to build a more sustainable organization.

Take a look at the Cleveland Clinic website for the details on how and why they value this management practice. Then do some searching yourself and look for another company that has a similar initiative…find a unique company that no other student has posted yet…and tell us about this practice at the company you selected. How has it been implemented? Who is in charge? What are the company plans for expanding and using the sustainability movement to improve business practices and profits?
